How does a centrifugal juicer works? 

They are named for the way they work. What are the disadvantages of a centrifugal juicer?

  • There can only be so much extraction that can happen with your produce from the fast spinning gears, making it less efficient at extracting juice compared to other types of juicers.
  • The rapid cutting and spinning also creates much heat and friction which results to oxidation of the fresh juice, degrading not just the taste but also the quality of nutrients
  • Not the best vegetable juicer. The fast chopping and spinning technology makes it less effective on greens such as spinach and kale because they have very low water content.

MASTICATING JUICERS

Masticating juicers are somewhat new to the juicing world. They use a single gear, usually an auger that pounds the produce into a pulp to release juice.

How does a masticating juicer work?

A masticating juicer usually has a chute where the chopped produce is put in, it goes down and is pulverised and grounded by a slow rotating auger that basically pounds it to a pulp, slowly releasing the juice through an opening, while separating the pulp from a different mouth.

This process is deemed highly effective in breaking down hard and fibrous cell walls of produce which in turn produces higher juice yield and dry pulp (though can’t say the same for sticky fruits like mango, strawberry, and dragon fruit).

Running at a lower speed compared to centrifugal juicers (as low as 60 rotations per minute), it takes longer to produce juice. However, this slower pace also produces little-to-no-heat which helps in minimizing oxidation – which preserves nutrients more.

What are the advantages of a masticating juicer?

  • Ideal juicing machine for greens and fibrous produce such as spinach, kale, and even wheat grass.
  • Juicer with higher juice yield because of the slow process allowing for more juice to be extracted.
  • Minimal oxidation because it doesn’t produce much heat during the juicing process compared to centrifugal juicers.
  • Some masticating juicers are multi-purpose, with some able to make nut butters, baby food, ground meat.
  • Minimal froth and foam because little heat is introduced in the juicing process.

  • Usually costlier than centrifugal juicers. Price range of masticating juicers are between $150 to $450.
  • It takes more time to extract juice due to it’s mechanism.
  • A juicing machine that requires more prep because of a smaller feed chute. You have to chop up fruits and vegetables so it can fit through usually a one-inch wide chute. Hard pits should also be removed as it might jam the auger.
  • Hard to clean parts because you need to disassemble after juicing and remove the auger.
  • Some sticky produce tends to jam the auger and can cause overflow

Horizontal single auger – the auger is set on a horizontal pattern next to the motor. When you put produce in, the auger crushes it to a pulp and allows juice to drip at the container below.  Excess pulp is ejected perpendicularly.

Vertical single auger – it works similar to the horizontal single auger. The only difference is that the auger is positioned vertically, so the juicer is made to be taller.

COLD PRESS JUICERS

What are the advantages of a cold-press juicer?

  • Cold-press juicers don’t use spinning blades or grinders to produce juice, so no heat is introduced in the process. Vital enzymes and nutrients are preserved because cold-press juicing doesn’t disturb the cellular structure of the produce.
  • The hydraulic presses do a great job of extracting most drop of juice (and nutrients) from the fibrous cell walls of the produce so nutrients are easily absorbed by the body.

How does a twin gear or triturating juicer work?

  1. I have bought a cheap juicer before and while it works well, the juice is very pulpy which is something I don’t like. I suggest to those who are still thinking of buying one to invest in a good juicer. One that has a good warranty program 1-2 years.
